Thanks To

Ÿ         The judges who have kindly joined us this evening to give us a few tips for showing our produce at next month’s show.

Ÿ         Our Committee members for setting up the hall this evening

Ÿ         All our members who entered flowers at last month’s show.  There was a magnificent display – a total of 147 entries.

New members

The Club welcomes Gaye Smith from Ludlow

Don’t Forget…

Those of you who won trophies last August, please return them to one of the committee members.  Please polish them and wrap them in cling film to prevent tarnishing.  These should all be returned to the committee by the weekend of August 8th/9th.

This is your final chance to be sure of a ticket for the ‘Evening with Chris Beardshaw’ in November.  (Tickets available on request at the Treasurer’s table).  The tickets will not be available in August.  In September we will be selling ‘guest’ tickets – one per member – and that member must have a ticket of their own.  The price for a guest ticket is £12.00, and we are expecting them to sell fast.   Please do not ask to be put on a waiting list for guest tickets - this is not an option.

Tonight is Club Supper Evening

As I hope you are aware by now, we are having a change this year.  We have invited 3 of the August Show judges for the evening and they have each agreed to give a short talk on ‘Tips for Showing’.  The talks will take place in the Small Hall and each Judge will talk for about 15 minutes. They will be with us for the evening so you will have plenty of chance to ask questions.

6.45 – 7.00                  Members arrive at hall – Buffet to be laid out

            7.00 – 7.15                  David Griffiths Vegetables

            7.20 – 7.35                  Pat Smith                     Preserves
            7.40 – 7.55                  Esther Simpson           Flower Arranging

8.00 onwards               Draw, Notices and then ……  our meal

As usual, we will draw table numbers to give the order that you may select your choices from the buffet table.  This year we will have 2 separate draws – 1st draw for the savoury course then a 2nd draw for the dessert.

Loaves of bread, butter and cheese will be supplied by the club.

Coffee and tea is available in the kitchen.  Please help yourselves and remember to clean up afterwards - put your cups and saucers away in the cupboard.

Please try to remember to take home ALL your dishes, cutlery etc.

AUGUST SHOW

Schedule

The Schedule is now available on our website with links to printable versions.  Paper copies are available this evening.  (Please tell Sue Brown if there are none left)

We have once again been awarded the Banksian Medal by the RHS.  This will be presented to the person with the most horticultural points in the show.

Please note there are additional rules in class 91 – Photography.  We have also put photographic tips on the web and printed some copies for those without Internet access.

Please read the schedule carefully as there are changes from last year that may affect you and your entries.

Plant & Produce Stall

Once again we are asking members to supply goods for sale at the plant stall in August.  Not only plants, but produce is welcomed, too.  So if you don’t know what to do with a glut of fruit and / or vegetables, please bring them along on August 22nd for us to sell.  Remember we have many visitors to Orleton who we hope will visit the show.

September Outing

We had a very good response to the questionnaire.  However, when we approached Stockton Bury they informed us they will only arrange a private visit with lunch included.  We have declined as this is a garden we can easily visit at any time.

Monica and Julian Todd have kindly invited members to their garden in Leominster on September 2nd, at .  There will be a small charge as tea will be included and we hope to make a donation to a local charity with some of the proceeds.  We will ensure each member has the details and a form as soon as possible.  We will need to know numbers to be able to provide tea.

Old Windows
Rose Jones has a variety of metal framed windows that may be of use to someone – perhaps to build cold frames or something more innovative.  Please contact Rose, after
, on 01568 780696

Signing In

The Committee thanks all the club members who have been signing in over the past year.  We are pleased to report that turnout has been good and generally more than half our members are able to come along to the club meetings.  For the period we have kept records, it would seem that the varied subjects of the talks have been of interest to most of our members at some time.  Thanks again to Lyn Hyde for arranging our programme.

Left on the coach…..

After the trip to Aberglasney a large square scarf was found on the coach.  It has a beige background with a pattern of pink and darker beige roses.  Please see Sue Brown if it is yours, or you know who it belongs to. (Apologies for not adding this to the newsletter last month.

Things to do, Places to Visit

Ÿ         Caynham & District Gardening Society have sent us their annual programme.  The details are on our web site and can also be found on the notice board.  Visitors are welcome  (charge of £1.00)

Seasonal tips – something to make if you have a glut of blackcurrants

Home-made Creme de Cassis  (tried & tested!)

1lb / 450g blackcurrants

10 fl oz / 250ml red wine (something punchy, such as a Shiraz)

1lb 4oz / 560g sugar

Vodka

Soak the blackcurrants in the red wine for 48 hours.  Then put them in a wide pan and heat gently.  When fruit is hot, mash with a potato masher until pulpy.

Put a nylon jelly bag over bowl and pour in pulp.  Hang up and let all the liquid pour out, then squeeze out the rest of the juice, which will be pretty thick.

Pour back in the saucepan and add the sugar.  Heat very gently, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved, then keep on the lowest heat possible until the liquid has reduced by about a third.

Measure the quantity of syrup you have created and add one part vodka to three of syrup.

Pour into clean, sterilised bottles and leave for about a week before opening.
